Thy Will Be Done (Part 2)

This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’ Matthew 6:9-13

Episode Summary

In this episode of Year on the Mountaintop, we continue exploring the Lord’s Prayer and the meaning of “Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” What does it actually mean to live within God’s will? Is God directing every decision we make, from our careers and relationships to where we live and what we do each day? Or does following God leave room for freedom, creativity, and our own choices? Jesus’ prayer invites us to see God’s will not as a source of anxiety, but as an invitation to partnership with God.

Through the teachings of Jesus, Paul, Proverbs, Romans, Acts, and the Sermon on the Mount, this session explores how to discern God’s will, hear the leading of the Holy Spirit, and make decisions without becoming paralyzed by fear. Rather than treating God’s will like a narrow tightrope where one wrong decision can ruin our lives, we’ll consider a vision of Christian discipleship grounded in trust, spiritual formation, and freedom. As we become more like Christ, our desires and decisions are increasingly shaped by God’s ways—and praying “Your will be done” becomes a liberating invitation to live faithfully, courageously, and fully within God’s love.
