Give Us — Year on the Mountaintop
Year on the Mountaintop A 52-week journey through the Sermon on the Mount

The Model Prayer (Session 9)

Give Us

This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’ Matthew 6:9-13

Episode Summary

In this episode of Year on the Mountaintop, we come to the next petition of the Lord’s Prayer: “Give us this day our daily bread.” At first glance, this may seem like a simple prayer for food and daily necessities. But Jesus’ words carry a much deeper meaning. Drawing on the story of manna in the wilderness, this petition invites us to trust God as our provider while recognizing that daily bread is not merely a spiritual metaphor—it represents the food, resources, security, and necessities human beings need to flourish.

The word “us” is just as important as the word “bread.” Jesus does not teach us to pray “give me my daily bread,” but to ask for enough for the whole community. In this session, we’ll explore the relationship between daily provision, generosity, economic justice, consumerism, and the calling of the Christian community to ensure that everyone has enough. From Exodus and the manna in the wilderness to the shared resources of the early church in Acts, “Give us this day our daily bread” becomes a radical prayer for human flourishing, equality, sustainability, and justice—and a challenge to become the kind of community that helps make that prayer a reality.
