Thy Will Be Done (Part 1)

This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’ Matthew 6:9-13

Episode Summary

In this episode of Year on the Mountaintop, we arrive at the next phrase of the Lord’s Prayer: “Thy will be done.” After exploring God as our security, source, sovereign, and sacred Creator, Jesus teaches us to recognize God as the one whose will is greater than our own. But what does it actually mean to pray for God’s will—and how do we distinguish between God’s sovereign purposes and the moral will God has revealed for how we live?

This session explores the biblical concept of God’s will, from the purposes God accomplishes throughout history to the commands we can choose to obey or ignore. Rather than treating God’s will as a mysterious puzzle about every decision we make, Jesus’ prayer points us toward a life shaped by justice, mercy, humility, love of God, and love of neighbor. To pray “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven” is therefore not simply to surrender our personal desires—it is to commit ourselves to participating in God’s work of transforming our communities and the world.
