Those Who Mourn

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Matthew 5:4

Episode Summary

What does it mean to be “blessed” when the world around you is broken? In this video, we explore the second Beatitude in Matthew 5:4—“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted”—and why Jesus places God’s favor not on those who have everything together, but on those who are willing to grieve the brokenness of the world. Mourning in the Sermon on the Mount is more than personal sadness; it is the deep lament that recognizes sin, injustice, oppression, and suffering and refuses to look away.

From the biblical tradition of lament to Habakkuk’s cry of “How long, Lord?”, this study explores how godly grief can lead to repentance, action, community, and hope. We’ll consider what it means to mourn with others, to carry one another’s burdens, and to recognize the Holy Spirit as the Comforter who comes alongside us in our grief. Jesus’ promise is not that suffering is insignificant or that we should pretend to be happy—it is that those who mourn will discover that they are not alone, and that God’s healing work has already begun.
