Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:3

Episode Summary

What does Jesus mean when he says, “Blessed are the poor in spirit”? In this video, we explore the first Beatitude in Matthew 5:3 and examine why spiritual poverty is not about low self-esteem, self-denigration, or thinking less of humanity. Instead, Jesus points toward a humility that recognizes our need for God and the transforming presence of the Holy Spirit.

Through the story of Moses, the testimony of formerly enslaved pastor Leonard Black, and Jesus’ warnings about spiritual self-sufficiency, this study explores the difference between relying on our own strength and receiving God’s grace. To be “poor in spirit” is to recognize that we cannot make ourselves whole on our own—and that acknowledging our need for God opens us to the richness of the Spirit and participation in the kingdom of heaven.
