Do Not! (Session 11)
Do Not Throw Pearls to Pigs
Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces. Matthew 7:6
Episode Summary
What does Jesus mean when he says, “Do not give dogs what is sacred” and “do not throw your pearls to pigs”? As Jesus concludes the “do not” statements of the Sermon on the Mount, this difficult and often misunderstood teaching in Matthew 7:6 invites us to think about discernment, judgment, and how we share what we believe is valuable. Rather than simply labeling people as “dogs” or “pigs,” Jesus challenges his followers to consider whether their words and judgments are actually helpful, meaningful, and beneficial.
This teaching explores the meaning of Jesus’ imagery of sacred things and pearls, the limits of arguing with people who are unwilling to listen, and the dangers of turning faith into a culture war. Christian discernment is not about contempt for people who disagree with us; it is about knowing when to speak, when to listen, and when to step away while keeping the invitation to God’s kingdom open. Following Jesus means replacing vitriol and coercion with compassion, wisdom, and love.
