Do Not! (Session 10)
Do Not Be Hypocritical
Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. Matthew 7:3-5
Episode Summary
What happens when the church preaches one thing but lives another? Religious hypocrisy has become one of the major obstacles between people and Christianity, creating a disconnect between the teachings of Jesus and the way Christians are perceived and experienced. In Matthew 7:3–5, Jesus addresses this problem with his memorable image of the speck and the plank: before we point out someone else’s shortcomings, we must honestly confront our own. This teaching explores Christian hypocrisy, self-reflection, judgment, and what it means to live authentically as followers of Jesus.
Jesus’ warning is not simply “never judge” or ignore the problems of others. Instead, he calls his followers to remove the plank from their own eye so they can clearly and lovingly help others remove their specks. The kingdom community Jesus describes is one where shortcomings are brought into the light, hypocrisy is confronted, and correction happens through grace, justice, mercy, and love rather than shame and self-righteousness.
