The Law Turned Upside Down (Session 4)
Against Misogyny
It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’ But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery. Matthew 5:31-32
Episode Summary
This session on the Sermon on the Mount explores one of Jesus’ most challenging teachings: “You have heard it said…but I say unto you” concerning divorce. Rather than using Matthew 5:31–32 to create a rigid prohibition against divorce or remarriage, Jesus confronts the patriarchal interpretation of Jewish law that allowed husbands to dismiss their wives easily and leave women vulnerable to exploitation and social stigma. By returning to the purpose of Deuteronomy 24, Jesus reframes the law around protecting the vulnerable rather than granting power to those who already have it.
The video also examines Jesus’ teaching in the context of abuse, remarriage, adultery, and the dignity of women. Jesus’ concern is not simply whether divorce is technically permissible, but whether human relationships reflect God’s purposes of justice, faithfulness, protection, and wholeness. This interpretation of the Antitheses shows Jesus challenging systems that use Scripture to justify inequality and instead calling his Kingdom community to protect the vulnerable, confront injustice, and uphold the inherent value of every person.
