The Law Turned Upside Down (Session 3)
Against Lust
You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell. Matthew 5:27-30
Episode Summary
What does Jesus mean when he says, “You have heard that it was said… but I tell you” about adultery and lust? In this session on the Sermon on the Mount, we explore the second Antithesis and Jesus’ deeper interpretation of the seventh commandment. Rather than creating another list of external rules about sexuality, Jesus moves the focus from outward behavior to the desires and intentions of the heart. His teaching challenges the idea that sexual temptation is someone else’s responsibility and instead calls each person to take responsibility for their own thoughts, desires, and actions.
This video also examines how Jesus’ teaching challenges the objectification of women and the assumptions of purity culture that place responsibility for male sexual desire on women’s bodies, clothing, or behavior. By moving the issue of lust from the person being observed to the heart of the person doing the looking, Jesus affirms the inherent dignity, autonomy, and worth of every person. The Kingdom of God offers a different vision of sexuality—one rooted in responsibility, consent, sacredness, and mutual human dignity rather than shame, control, and objectification.
