Thy Kingdom Come — Year on the Mountaintop
Year on the Mountaintop A 52-week journey through the Sermon on the Mount

The Model Prayer (Session 6)

Thy Kingdom Come

This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’ Matthew 6:9-13

Episode Summary

In this episode of Year on the Mountaintop, we come to the second petition of the Lord’s Prayer: “Thy kingdom come.” After naming God as our security, source, and sovereign holiness, Jesus teaches us to pray for God’s kingdom to come into the world. But what kind of kingdom is Jesus describing? Rather than a political empire enforced through power or violence, Jesus presents a kingdom that transforms people from the inside out and creates an alternative community shaped by the values of God.

As we explore this powerful petition, we’ll consider Jesus’ teaching about the kingdom of heaven, the contrast between the kingdom of God and the empires of humanity, and what it means to live as citizens and ambassadors of God’s kingdom. To pray “Thy kingdom come” is not simply to wait for a future heavenly reality—it is to ask how God’s reign can become visible in our lives, our communities, and the world around us.
