Hallowed — Year on the Mountaintop
Year on the Mountaintop A 52-week journey through the Sermon on the Mount

The Model Prayer (Session 5)

Hallowed

This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’ Matthew 6:9-13

Episode Summary

In this episode of Year on the Mountaintop, we come to the first petition of the Lord’s Prayer: “Hallowed be thy name.” After inviting us to call God “Father,” Jesus immediately reminds us that this intimate relationship does not diminish God’s holiness. God is both approachable and transcendent, close to us yet completely set apart as Creator and King. Understanding what it means for God’s name to be “hallowed” becomes the foundation for everything else we pray.

We’ll explore the meaning of holiness, the biblical imagery of God’s sacred presence, and what it means not only to recognize God as holy but to portray God as holy through our lives. “Hallowed be thy name” is more than a statement of praise—it is a commitment to reflect God’s character in the way we live, treat others, and participate in the kingdom community.
