“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” – Matthew 5:9
Not peace-wishers. Not peace-dreamers. Not peace-keepers or -talkers or -hopers or -thinkers or -wanters, or -admirers. Not even peace-lovers. Peace is something that must be made. It never happens by chance. It’s never maintained by accident. It doesn’t come about without effort or a plan. It cannot be implemented from a distance. It is forged through courage, presence, and intentional action. Peacemaking means stepping into places of conflict and working, patiently and persistently, to bring something new into being.
How can you move from being a peace-hoper to being a peace-maker in your own context?
Red Letter Christians
Red Letter Christians is a non-denominational Christian movement founded in 2007 by progressive evangelical authors and activists Tony Campolo and Shane Claiborne. The movement emerged as a counter-cultural reaction to the American religious right, seeking to distance faith from partisan politics and shift the evangelical focus away from a narrow set of dogmatic issues toward Jesus’s radical lifestyle commands. Guided primarily by teachings like the Sermon on the Mount, Red Letter Christians emphasize active social justice—specifically advocating for the poor, ending capital punishment, promoting racial reconciliation, protecting the environment, and practicing peace and nonviolence.
