Do Not! (Session 9)

Do Not Judge

Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Matthew 7:1-2

Episode Summary

What did Jesus really mean when he said, “Do not judge”? In Matthew 7:1, these famous words are often used to shut down criticism, accountability, or difficult conversations—but the rest of the Sermon on the Mount shows that Jesus was not calling his followers to abandon discernment. Instead, he challenges us to examine how we judge others, warning that the standard we use for others will also be applied to us. In this teaching, we explore the difference between healthy judgment and destructive judgmentalism, and why discernment remains an essential part of following Jesus.

As Jesus continues through Matthew 7, he calls his followers to recognize false teaching, examine the fruit of others, and distinguish truth from hypocrisy. The problem isn’t necessarily that Christians make judgments, but that we can judge others by standards we refuse to apply to ourselves. This video explores Jesus’ teaching on judgment, hypocrisy, grace, justice, and reconciliation—and asks what it might look like for Christians to practice discernment without becoming judgmental.
