God’s Favor (Session 9)

Those Who Are Persecuted

Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Matthew 5:10-12

Episode Summary

This session brings the Beatitudes to their culmination with Jesus’ final blessing for those who are persecuted because of righteousness. It explores how the first seven Beatitudes form a way of life that can put followers of Jesus at odds with systems of power, injustice, and empire. Drawing on the experience of the early church and the witness of persecuted Christians throughout history, this video asks what genuine Christian persecution looks like—and how it differs from resistance to the loss of cultural or political power.

The final Beatitude also turns the message personally toward Jesus’ followers: when we pursue justice, mercy, righteousness, peace, and nonviolent resistance, we follow the path Jesus himself modeled. The Sermon on the Mount presents an upside-down Kingdom of God in which power is surrendered rather than grasped, enemies are loved rather than destroyed, and righteousness is pursued even when it comes at a cost. This session explores the promise at the heart of the Beatitudes: those who faithfully embody the way of Jesus belong to the Kingdom of Heaven.
