Do Not! (Session 6)
Do Not Store Up Treasure
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! Matthew 6:19-23
Episode Summary
In this session on Matthew 6:19–21 and Jesus’ teaching about money, we come to one of the most challenging parts of the Sermon on the Mount: Jesus’ warning against storing up earthly treasures. Building on his teachings about giving, prayer, and fasting, Jesus confronts the way wealth can shape our priorities, allegiance, and understanding of what it means to live in the kingdom of God. This video explores why Jesus spoke so often about money and why he presents material wealth as something that can compete directly with our devotion to God.
Jesus’ command to “store up treasures in heaven” is not simply a metaphor for accumulating spiritual experiences or doing good things while keeping our earthly wealth untouched. In the context of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus is talking directly about how we use our financial resources. Through the rich young ruler, the teachings of Luke, and Jesus’ warning that we cannot serve both God and money, this session examines wealth, generosity, poverty, consumerism, and kingdom community—and asks what it means to use what we have not to accumulate and hoard, but to promote human flourishing and participate in bringing God’s kingdom to earth.
