Five Minute Devotions | Overview

According to a Crossway survey, the number one barrier to studying Scripture is the lack of time. Reading the Bible can be a daunting task. It’s a huge book with the thinnest of pages that is often not very easy to understand or apply. More than once, I’ve begun the year with an ambitious reading goal only to find myself lagging behind just a few months in. We always begin the year with the best of intentions, but lacking any structure or external motivator, these intentions die the slow death of our busyness. Five Minute Devotions is here to change that.

Most Christians place a high value on Scripture. But while the average household owns three Bibles, 53% barely ever read it. That’s because we often lack accountability in our Scripture readings. Either we sit down without a plan, by ourselves, and so there’s nobody to tell us that we’re not keeping up because even we don’t know what we should be doing. A failure to plan is a plan to fail. Or, we buy any one of the hundreds of devotionals only to find out that a book doesn’t give us much accountability either.

The third thing that keeps us from Scripture is the lack of community. You may read the Bible, get a new insight, but there’s nobody to share it with that understands your passion. Go see the latest blockbuster movie and you can have discussions about wherever you go. Everybody is on the same page. That’s not always the case with our daily devotionals. For the lack of community, the passion dies.

Five Minute Devotions can change that. We’ll offer you the accessibility, accountability, and community for you to read through the entire New Testament in just five minutes a day.

Accessibility

According to Nielsen, American adults spend over 11 hours per day listening to, watching, reading or generally interacting with media. Five Minute Devotions is going to be where you are already. We’re in your phone, on your computer, all up in your social media. You don’t need to come to us. We’ll come to you. And all we’re asking for is five minutes. 300 seconds. Bible study doesn’t have to be scary. It doesn’t have to be academic. It’s easy.

Accountability

I don’t know about you, but I like schedules and clearly-defined goals. I don’t have a good sense of direction, so I use my phone’s GPS often to find my way. Structure gives us accountability by keeping us on the right path. Let me loose in Scripture and I’ll read all of Matthew on day 1 and fizzle out soon thereafter. Five Minute Devotions will provide you the structure you need for success. There are 261 weekdays in the year. There are 260 chapters in the New Testament. Therefore, with weekends and one weekday off (Christmas!), you can read through the entire New Testament in one year. It was this realization that birthed the idea of this project. We’ve set up the readings so that every quarter, you’ll start off with a Gospel and end it with a collection of epistles and letters.

Community

The secret sauce to all of this isn’t going to be anything I can provide. It’s you. And I’ll be honest: that worries me a little bit. Maybe nobody will join me. Maybe we’ll go viral and thousands will want to be a part of this. (I don’t know which scares me more!) Because it’s one thing to read an online devotional. It’s another thing entirely to become a part of it. I invite you not just to read here, but to discuss. Join us in conversation by becoming a part of the #FiveMinuteDevotions Community on Facebook, following me on Twitter, or Instagram.
